As most of you are already experiencing a significant windstorm, we thought it would be helpful to share some vital information about being safe during this multi-day event.
Most importantly, be aware of your surroundings. Take extra care when walking across the street, driving down the block near your home, and engaging in any activity outside your home. Trees may fall, street lights may fail, and other people may not be paying attention. Being aware can save your life.
If you see downed power lines, assume they are energized and avoid them. You can report a downed power line via 9-1-1.
If the power goes out where you are, consider the following:
- Report outages online and track crew status at www.ladwp.com/outages or by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397).
- Switch off all lights except for one so you will know when your power has been restored.
- Keep your refrigerator closed to keep food cold for longer.
- Check on vulnerable friends and neighbors to make sure they are safe.
This is wildfire weather. BE AWARE.
The National Weather Service has issued a rare, “particularly dangerous situation” red flag warning, the most dire such warning issued by the weather service, for a high risk for dangerous fire weather conditions Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday afternoon for most Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. In the City of Los Angeles, Red Flag Alert parking restrictions will be in effect beginning Tuesday, January 7 at 8:00 am until further notice. Search for your neighborhood in this LAFD interactive map to view affected parking areas. Updates regarding the Red Flag Parking status can be found at https://ers.lafd.org/redflag/.
Take the appropriate steps to be alert to the possibility of a wildfire. Do you have your GO bag ready? Are your phones charged up? Does your vehicle have a full gas tank (or, if electric, is it fully charged)? Try to park off the street so emergency vehicles have better access if required. Are you signed up for NotifyLA alerts? If not, sign up for NotifyLA alerts and encourage your neighbors to do so.
