The issues related to obtaining wildfire insurance in southern California are not improving, despite actions taken by Governor Newsom and the State Department of Insurance. Now, more than ever before, people are being forced to rely on the California FAIR Plan for insurance coverage related to disasters generally and wildfire specifically. As more people sign up for the FAIR Plan, it becomes more fragile as well: a major wildfire could empty its cash and limit its payment capabilities.
Homeowners are being forced to either utilize the FAIR Plan or to attempt gaining insurance coverage via “un-admitted” insurance carriers, such as Loyds of London. The net result is that no matter how you spin things, getting fire insurance these days is very expensive, and in many cases, coverage is limited.
